Immunology research

Examples where our immunology research resulted in innovative ways to improve the life of patients.

Development of an in-dwelling subcutaneous port

In 2008, the Immunology department obtained an NHS Innovations award of £55,000 for the development of an in-dwelling subcutaneous port for the rapid subcutaneous infusion of immunoglobulin.

This device will transform the life of children with severe combined immunodeficiency syndromes who at present require repeated hospital admissions and painful procedures to allow intravenous immunoglobulin administration.

The work is on-going and first trials are expected towards the end of 2008.

Prototype multiple allergen skin testing device

A prototype multiple allergen skin testing device (MAST device) has been developed by the Immunology department following a previous NHS Innovations award.

This greatly simplifies allergy testing and will be available as pre-loaded devices for use in primary care. It is currently being assessed in the Immunology clinic.
