As of Sunday 4 January, 45 beds at St George’s, Epsom and St Helier hospitals were occupied by patients with flu.
Some beds have also had to be closed due to the infection and other illnesses like norovirus.
Frontline doctors and nurses say they often see an increase in falls and alcohol-related injuries around Christmas, as well as other health issues such as gastroenteritis, heart attacks, burns and mental health conditions.
Resident doctors in England will be taking industrial action from Wednesday 17 December t o Monday 22 December 2025 .
