A Cleaner based at Epsom Hospital has proved he doesn't need to polish up his act after winning a special award for excellence. Adelino Faggotti, who has been working for the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust for two years, was nominated for the Chief Executive's Award of Excellence by patient Elfrida Spooner.
The accolade, which is only given to twelve staff a year, recognises high standards of work and outstanding performance. It allows any employee, patient or relative, to nominate a member of staff they feel deserves recognition for their efforts. Each month one winner is selected and Chief Executive Samantha Jones presents a certificate and a £30 voucher in recognition of their achievement.
Mrs Spooner from Dorking nominated Adelino whilst she was in hospital recently for two weeks. She was impressed with his attention to detail, ensuring the ward she was staying on, Gloucester Ward, was always kept spotless.
"Adelino's attention to detail and steady thoroughness is admirable," Mrs Spooner said. "It is obvious that he has a complete understanding of the importance of his job. He is respectful of our dignity as patients and he goes about his work with a quiet dignity of his own. I am completely confident of the cleanliness of my environment here as a patient."
She added: "Adelino's efforts ensure that the hygiene and high standards of nursing and doctoring here are never compromised by a dirty ward."
Samantha Jones said the nomination is a tribute to Adelino's hard work and congratulated him. She said: "This award is given to staff members who go above and beyond what is expected from them. For a patient to go out of their way to nominate a staff member for excellence whilst they themselves are in hospital is a real testament - well done."
23 year old Adelino said he loves his job and being nominated for the award came as a bolt out of the blue.
He said: "I am extremely pleased to have received the award and to be nominated by a patient made the award even more special. It came as a big surprise to me when I found out."
Adelino added: "I like my job very much - I particularly enjoy speaking to the patients, working amongst very supportive colleagues and ensuring the ward is kept as clean as possible."
