Thousands raised by volunteers for new scanner

1 April 2008

Epsom Hospital's ante-natal unit is the proud owner of a brand new £25,000 ultrasound scanner thanks to the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS). The portable device, known as a Sonosite Micromaxx scanner, checks the positioning of unborn babies and can help identify abnormalities. It will be used by consultants and midwives at the unit on a regular basis.

The WRVS presented Senior Midwife, Hilary Murfin, and the team with the state-of-the-art baby scanner. Hilary said: "We are so grateful to the WRVS for this extremely generous donation. The WRVS volunteers at Epsom Hospital work tirelessly to raise money all year round and I am absolutely delighted they have decided to support our work. This is a much needed piece of equipment and it will really assist the team to deliver a first class ante-natal screening service."

Project Manager Heather Joyce, from the WRVS, said she was pleased her team was able to help the unit. She said: "I happened to be talking to one of the midwives one day and asked if there was any equipment they would like. The midwife told me they were in need of a Sonosite scanner and the rest is history. It took us about six or seven months to raise the money mainly through our coffee and general shops that we run on the Epsom site."

Heather added: "Any piece of equipment the hospital needs we are always happy to do our best to raise funds and help out."
