St Helier League of Friends donate £100,000 to improve endoscopy unit

6 June 2008

The endoscopy department at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust now boasts new and improved facilities thanks to the generosity of the St Helier League of Friends.

£100,000 has been donated by the volunteer organisation to modernise and refurbish the unit at St Helier Hospital. This money has allowed the department to improve not only the experience patient's have but also the facilities for staff. The changes include:

  • A new waiting area which offers patients, friends and family a more comfortable and relaxing area to wait;
  • A new discharge room that provides extra privacy and dignity for patients;
  • New office spaces for receptionists and other staff;
  • A refurbished staff area to provide the 30 strong staff with an area to relax during breaks.

Judy Scillitoe, project manager, said: "I would like to thank the League of Friends for their selfless work. The money they donated to the endoscopy unit will really help improve the service we offer to our patients. It has made a massive difference to our patients, many of whom are coming to be tested for serious illnesses, and the feedback we have received has been very positive."

The unit at St Helier is open six days a week. The endoscopy unit sees approximately 7,000 patients a year.

Val Brundle, Chairman of St Helier League of Friends, said: "We are delighted to have been able to help the endoscopy department along with the many other projects we are currently working on. Our objective is to provide funding where needed and this is an excellent example of where we have injected capital and seen a very positive outcome for patients and staff."
