The gynaecology ward at St Helier Hospital was officially re-opened last week (Monday 22 December) by the MP for Sutton and Cheam, Paul Burstow, following a refurbishment costing more than £440,000.
The ward, known as M2, treats and assists women with a wide range of gynaecological issues, including women who have suffered a miscarriage, need a hysterectomy or who are having problems conceiving.
Ward sister, Linda Welford, said: "The women that we care for here are often going through a very emotional and difficult time. Because of that, we need to make sure that they are receiving the best possible care in a nice, bright environment.
"The refurbishment has really made a fantastic difference to the whole of the ward - not just for our patients but for their families and for the staff too. It's a really nice environment, and from top to bottom, the whole ward looks modern, welcoming and light."
The refurbishment, which is part of the £2.8 million overhaul of the hospital's maternity unit, includes new flooring, new doors and the installation of two new showers and an en-suite bathroom.
But it's not just the décor that has changed - the Trust has also invested money in improving things behind the scenes, including a new heating system for the ward and revamping the sluice room (where all of the bedpans and bed linen is cleaned).
Paul Burstow MP said: "As a father of three children, all born at St Helier Hospital, I was delighted to celebrate the investment that has been made in the maternity unit.
"The ward looked modern, bright and welcoming, that's good for patients and staff too."
Chief Executive for the Trust, Samantha Jones said: "We were delighted to welcome Paul to the maternity unit today, and would like to thank him for coming to officially unveil the improvements to M2.
"We are incredibly pleased to offer local women the care that they need in such a nice environment, and we're very proud that the new ward is officially open.
