  • Nurseries set to blossom, thanks to new funding From left: childcare co-ordinator Katie Dudley, Willows manager Caroline Thomas, Councillor Tony Brett Young from Sutton Borough Council and Woodlands manager Lesley DavisonChildren and staff from the nurseries at St Helier and Sutton hospitals were left jumping for joy this week, as they were awarded £36,500 from Sutton Borough Council. The funding, which came from the Early Years Foundation Scheme, will be used to revamp the outside play areas at both nurseries and to purchase state-of-the-art IT equipment and teaching materials. 30 June 2009
  • Swine 'flu update 3 Dr Jonathan KwanThere have now been more than 2,700 confirmed cases of swine 'flu in the UK, with one death in Scotland. As you may know, the World Health Organization has declared 'Phase 6' of its pandemic alert system, which means that swine 'flu is now spreading in communities in several countries. 25 June 2009

  • Hospital's little stars shine bright at Carshalton Carnival Louise Marr and her big sister Caitlin on the Queen Mary's float. Caitlin is seven years old and dressed as Miss Neptune.Supporters of Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, which is based at St Helier Hospital, took to the streets on Saturday 13 June as part of the Carshalton Carnival. Dressed in planet and star-themed fancy dress and pushing an old hospital bed, the team of staff, young patients and parents walked the two mile carnival route while collecting donations from the crowds who had lined the route. 16 June 2009

After two and a half years of fundraising for new medical equipment, Don Hamilton presented a cheque for £5,050 to doctors and nurses at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC) on Wednesday (10 June). 15 June 2009
  • MP launches new £650,000 'life saving' gamma camera Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, at the launch of a brand new £650,000 gamma cameraTom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, visited St Helier Hospital last week (11 June) to officially launch a brand new £650,000 gamma camera. The hi-tech camera, which detects cancers and organ problems, offers patients from across Sutton, Merton and Epsom access to a faster and more accurate service. 15 June 2009
  • 'Noble' nurse scoops top prize From left: sisters at the renal unit Thandie Mkhize, Sarah Bruce, Angie Wight, Debbie Noble (front), radio presenter and host for the evening Robert Elms, and Sir Richard Sykes.A nurse who walked a total of 18 miles through heavy snow to treat a patient who could have died without urgent dialysis has scooped a prestigious award for her actions. In February, just after the worst of the record breaking levels of snow had fallen, renal nurse for Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Debbie Noble walked from her home in Ashtead to Ewell (and back) to dialyse a patient who could not get to hospital. 11 June 2009
  • Superheroes swoop into children's ward Paul Robertson, six year old Emilia Padovan and Stephen CrawleySuperheroes don't often visit hospitals, but at Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, which is based at St Helier Hospital, a team of movie stars and cartoon characters are set to stay for a while. A number of superhero cut-outs, including Batman, Spiderman and The Incredibles have been donated to the hospital by St Patrick's Church in Wallington and now sit proudly on the walls of the waiting room. 11 June 2009
  • Hospital expert puts tanning myths to bed Skin cancer experts at Epsom and St Helier hospitals are alerting local residents to the dangers of sunbeds. It follows the story last month of ten-year-old Kelly Thompson from Port Talbot who spent 16 minutes on a sunbed and suffered burns to 70 per cent of her body. 10 June 2009

As part of a major refurbishment, the department has purchased two new dentists' chairs worth £16,000 each. 05 June 2009
