Cover NHS staff survey 2008

25 March 2009

Staff at Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals are happy with many aspects of their work life, according to the latest figures from a national survey.

New results from the 2008 annual NHS staff survey, which is conducted by health watchdog, the Healthcare Commission, show that the Trust is doing very well in a number of key areas.

For example, such a high number of our staff feel satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they are able to deliver we are in the top 20 per cent of trusts across the country. The Trust is also in the top 20 per cent of English hospitals for the percentage of staff who understand their role and where it fits in.

Our training figures have also improved upon last year's figures, with 80 per cent of our staff now regularly undergoing training, learning or career development programmes.

Director of Human Resources, Michael Burden said: "We are incredibly pleased with the results of this year's NHS staff survey. The figures show that on the whole, our staff enjoy working here, and job satisfaction within the Trust continues to grow.

"We are committed to the personal development and well-being of all members of staff and will continue to do all we possibly can to make working for the Trust fulfilling and rewarding. Improving the working lives of our staff can only help us to provide better care for our patients."

"We recognise that there are some aspects of working at the Trust that can be improved, however the results from this latest survey not only allow us to measure what our staff like about working within Epsom, Sutton and St Helier, they also help us build on things staff do not find so good.

"Our staff are the key to our success as an organisation. We will be studying our results further and, by comparing them with those of similar NHS organisations, we will identify opportunities to make lasting improvements."

The NHS staff survey is believed to be one of the largest surveys of staff in the world. The 2008 NHS staff survey questionnaires were completed between October and December by 160,000 workers from all 390 NHS trusts.
