Treading carefully - Trust reduces carbon footprint

Energy saving poster

6 May 2009

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust saved energy and money this Easter, following a campaign to turn off lights and computers that were not in use.

New figures from the Trust show a record breaking dip in the amount of energy used over the Easter bank holiday. During a normal weekend, the Trust uses 165,498 kilowatts of energy but over Easter this year, only 152,072 kilowatts were used. The reduction saved the Trust £500 and is an improvement on last year's Easter bank holiday when 156,854 kilowatts of power was used.

To help reduce the impact the Trust has on the environment and to reduce bills, the Trust is taking big steps to reduce the amount of energy it uses, with an aim of cutting the total by 15 per cent by 2010.

Rupert Hughes is the Trust's Energy Manager. He said: "Our campaigning, which urged staff and volunteers to switch off lights and turn off computers was really effective this Easter weekend, as the Trust saw a significant reduction in the amount of energy we used.

"Not only will this save us valuable money to invest in caring for our patients, but it also helps to reduce our carbon footprint. For that, we owe our staff and volunteers a huge thank you.

"We still have a lot of work to do in making sure we are as kind to the environment as possible, and will continue to remind staff and volunteers to keep up the hard work and to carry on turning off all electrical appliances that are not in use."
