British comedian, Jimmy Tarbuck OBE, popped in to Epsom Hospital last week (28 October) to present staff in the operating theatres with a brand new piece of equipment.
Known as a camera stack, the machine is used in performing keyhole surgery. It cost £42,000 and was donated to the hospital by the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund.
Jimmy said: "I really admire the work that the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund is doing and so it's a pleasure to pop along and present this incredible machine.
"By donating this piece of state-of-the-art equipment, the charity has enabled the hospital staff to get on with their job with the best possible equipment by their side. It's making life for the surgeons and staff a little easier, which in turn makes life better for me, you and everyone that's treated here.
"No-one wants to be ill, but at least with great staff and fantastic equipment like this, you know you're in safe hands. The last time I had an operation, it was done with a blow torch and a lamp, so at least things are getting better."
The camera stack will help in more complex operations where the surgeons need to be able to be able to hone in on the area of the body being operated on. Patients with kidney, bladder, prostate, and pelvic floor problems will benefit from the new camera.
Consultant urologist, Roger Walker, received the camera stack from Jimmy. He said: "We're incredibly grateful to the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund for raising the funds needed for the camera stack. We know it's an expensive piece of equipment, but we'll definitely make good use of it and it will really benefit our patients.
"We would also like to thank Jimmy for coming along to make the presentation. He really made the occasion a special one - and he had everyone in stitches with his jokes."
