Children from Muschamp Primary School in Carshalton paid a special visit to St Helier Hospital on Thursday (15 October), to find out more about the hospital and to drop off 'get well soon' cards for the patients.
More than 50 year one pupils (aged five and six) were met by paediatric matron Lorna Bramwells and the Trust's play specialist Sara Smith. The children, who are currently looking at the topic 'people who help us', heard all about the roles that both Lorna and Sara play at the hospital.
Lorna said: "It was really nice to meet the Muschamp pupils and to have the chance to speak to them about what happens on a children's ward. I was surprised to hear how many of the children have been treated at Queen Mary's Hospital for Children (which is based at St Helier Hospital) - when I asked how many have been in the hospital overnight most of them put their hands up.
"All of the children brought a lovely card that they had made in class. It's obvious that a lot of time and effort has gone into making the cards, and I'm sure that our patients will be touched by the special gesture."
Renee Mills, a year one teacher from the school said: "The topic of 'people who help us' has been a real success so far. Going out on visits like this one really helps the children get to grips with what they're studying - it's all about bringing their learning to life.
"Next week the kids will take part in a special assembly where they can dress up as whatever they want to be when they're grown up. Who knows, they might all come as paediatric matrons!"
