  • 'Operation Butterfly' takes flight Lydia JonesA new fundraising campaign to help build a support centre for cancer patients and their loved ones at St Helier Hospital has been launched. The campaign, known as 'Operation Butterfly', is a joint initiative between the Sutton Guardian and the Trust and aims to raise £10,000 over the next few months. Fundraisers and volunteers at the Trust have already raised £40,000 towards the project. 28 September 2009

In her right is the older type of digital hearing aid.Patients with hearing difficulties at Epsom and St Helier hospitals are now waiting just ten weeks for a hearing aid, compared to an average wait of two years at the beginning of 2008. 25 September 2009
  • Brand new birthing centre almost ready to deliver Some of the midwives from the unit celebrate the arrival of the final pieces of equipment, including bean bags and swimming floats. These items will help to put the finishing touches to the new birthing centre, which includes four newly designed birthing rooms and three birthing pools. 23 September 2009
  • Public get chance to put questions to health chiefs Annual Public Meeting 2008Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is holding its Annual Public Meeting from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday 29 September at Epsom Hospital.   • Number of C. difficile cases cut by 20 per cent Peter ColesThe number of cases of C. difficile at Sutton, Epsom and St Helier hospitals has dropped by more than 20 per cent, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Agency. The new figures show that between April to June 2009, 67 patients were found to have the infection, which is also known as Clostridium difficile. This is an improvement on the figure for the same period in 2008, when there were 85 cases - a drop of more than a fifth. 18 September 2009

  • Cases of MRSA continue to fall at hospitals Samantha Jones and Dr Jonathan Kwan at the launch of the new infection control campaignNew figures show that the number of MRSA cases at Epsom, St Helier and Sutton hospitals are still falling. The latest data, published on Thursday (9 September 2009) by the Health Protection Agency, show that the Trust had eight cases of MRSA (bacteraemia) from April to June of this year.   • Queen and government hear of ambulance drivers' great service Ambulance drivers Michaelle Addison and Monday ErhabourTwo G4S NHS transport ambulance drivers for Sutton, St Helier and Epsom hospitals have got their names in high places, after one grateful patient wrote to Her Majesty The Queen about the service they provide. Margaret Shaw from Carshalton was so impressed by the care and service that the ambulance drivers, Michaelle Addison and Monday Erhabour gave to her that she wrote to The Queen at Buckingham Palace. 09 September 2009

  • Hospital staff conquer highest mountain in Ireland Kristian Stolt, Julie Vosper, Sophie Harris, Ros Abraham and Lee Groom (from left to right)Not many people would like to spend their summer holidays hiking up a mountain with their workmates, but that's exactly what staff from Epsom Hospital have done for the past three years. After completing the three peaks challenge last year and climbing to Everest base camp the previous year, this summer the intrepid team of five accident and emergency (A&E) staff members climbed the tallest mountain in the Emerald isle. 04 September 2009

  • Family ties reach across warzone Elaine Howlin, a nurse in the clinical assessment unit at Epsom Hospital and a medic for the Territorial ArmyA nurse from Epsom Hospital is set to join her son in the Afghanistan warzone when she begins an operational tour with the Territorial Army (TA) in October. Elaine Howlin, a nurse in the clinical assessment unit (CAU) at Epsom Hospital and a medic for the TA, will be posted in the main hospital in Camp Bastion - just 50 miles away from where her son, Martin is fighting on the front line. 01 September 2009
