  • Hospital mental health team named as 'excellent' The liaison psychiatry teamThe team of doctors and nurses who help to support people with mental health issues while they are patients at St Helier Hospital has been given the highest possible rating in a national accreditation scheme. The liaison psychiatry service helps and treats patients with a wide range of issues, including dementia, alcohol and drug addiction, depression and anxiety. 21 December 2010
  • Food for thought - recycling initiative takes off at Trust Gloria Randall, the Trust's waste managerEpsom and St Helier hospitals have joined a new recycling initiative that sees food waste from the hospitals being turned into rich fertiliser for local farms. And just five months after the Trust joined the scheme, more than 12 tonnes of waste has been diverted away from landfill sites and 'ploughed' back into the earth. 20 December 2010

  • Monitoring the Mayor - new equipment unveiled at Epsom Hospital Tracy Reeman, cllr Smitherham and Dr Ruth CharltonThe Mayor of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, Cllr Clive Smitherham, visited Epsom Hospital recently to officially unveil two new monitors which cost £1,500. The 'comfort cuff' monitors, which have been donated to the hospital by the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund, will help to monitor patients' blood pressures, oxygen levels and heart rate. 16 December 2010
  • Board outlines next step towards achieving foundation trust status Samantha Jones, Chief ExecutiveAt its monthly meeting on Friday (10 December), the Board agreed that the Trust is unable to become a foundation trust in its current form and that it needs to explore alternative options. The decision comes after the new Government restated its commitment to all NHS hospitals becoming foundation trusts (or part of one) and added a deadline for it happening by March 2014. 14 December 2010

The Doctor Foster Hospital Guide 2010, which was published this week (28 November), revealed the hospital standardised mortality ratio (HSMR) for all 147 acute hospital trusts in the country. 03 December 2010
