The Mayor of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, Cllr Clive Smitheram, visited Epsom Hospital recently to officially unveil two new monitors which cost £1,500.

The 'comfort cuff' monitors, which have been donated to the hospital by the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund, will help to monitor patients' blood pressures, oxygen levels and heart rate while they undergo treatment in the haematology and medical day unit.

The day unit, which treats more than 2,500 patients a year, investigates and treats blood disorders, which includes giving chemotherapy to patients with leukaemia and lymphoma or blood transfusions to those with anaemia.

The Trust's Deputy Medical Director and consultant paediatrician, Dr Ruth Charlton, officially received the monitors from the Mayor. She said: "I am thrilled to be able to accept these monitors on behalf of the hospital. They are a very sleek design, and are much more comfortable than the older ones. The day unit provides a vital service to our patients, and these new monitors are a fantastic addition to that.

"I would like to say a huge thank you to the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund for working so hard to raise funds for the hospital and purchasing the equipment, and a huge well done to the team in the day unit. Receiving a donation such as this one is great recognition of their hard work."

Mayor Clive Smitheram said: "It's a pleasure to present these new monitors to the hospital. It's a lovely unit and it has a very positive atmosphere, so it's great to be able to add to that in some way. I wish all of the patients, staff and of course, the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund, the very best."

Senior sister in the haematology and medical day unit, Tracy Reeman said: "It was such a pleasant surprise when Bess (the co-ordinator of the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund) got in touch to say that she had bought us two new monitors. They're a real boost to the unit and they're already going down well with our patients."
