Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Laurence Newman as a new Non-Executive Director.
Laurence, who lives in Wimbledon, has significant experience in both the private and public sectors, including 20 years with the accountants and consultants KPMG. He is currently an Executive Director for Big Picture Consulting, a project management and consulting practice that specialises in leisure, tourism and property development.
Laurence said: "The NHS is an incredible organisation, whose work is invaluable to people across the country. I have only ever experienced the health service as a patient, and thought now would be a very interesting time to get involved in helping to run a hospital trust."
"From my limited experience, I can tell that the NHS is like an iceberg; so much goes on under the surface that you just don't get to see from an outside perspective. I had no idea how much was involved in running a large trust such as this, and it will be fascinating to get involved in more depth."
Trust Chairman John Davey said: "I am delighted to welcome Laurence to the Trust Board. He brings a range of experience and knowledge that will further strengthen the Board and add greatly to the effectiveness of our work. His links with the local community, combined with his experience of managing change in large organisations, will be an extremely valuable asset."
Laurence is an experienced Non-Executive Director, and he sits on the Board of three charities, The Waterways Trust, Comic Relief and Creativity, Culture and Education. He is also a Non-Executive Director for the Grove End Housing Association.
Laurence's four-year term officially began on 1 December 2009 and will end on 13 November 2013. The remuneration for the Non-Executive Director post is £6,096 per annum. He does not have political or other interests which have to be declared.
All non-executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. This appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice.
Laurence replaces Sue Marshall, who retired from the Trust in November last year.
