  • Government gives go ahead for £219 million St Helier Hospital redevelopment Siobhain McDonagh, MP for Mitcham and Morden, John Davey, Trust Chair, Samantha Jones, Chief Executive and Mike O'Brien, Minister of State for Health Services (from left)A landmark scheme to spend £219 million redeveloping St Helier Hospital in London has been given the go ahead by the government. As a result, almost of third of the current site will be demolished and replaced with a brand new building, which will house the majority of the hospital's wards and clinics. To help improve the privacy of patients and reduce the spread of infections, more than 50 per cent of the 346 beds in the new building will be in single rooms. 22 March 2010

A YouGov poll of more than 2,000 adults suggests that 22% of people blame peer pressure when they drink more than they planned to, while 39% feel the need to make up an excuse or lie to justify refusing a drink. 22 March 2010
  • National survey shows hospital staff are satisfied Michael BurdenStaff at Epsom, St Helier and Sutton hospitals are feeling increasingly satisfied with their jobs and are enthusiastic about coming to work, according to the results of a national survey, published today (17 March). The Care Quality Commission's 2009 annual staff survey, which is now in its seventh year, has been designed to find out how staff feel about their work and the organisation they work for. 17 March 2010

  • Texting service set to save millions Text message reminding you of your hospital appointmentA new texting service has been launched by the Trust to help make sure people attend their hospital appointments. The move comes after missed appointments cost the Trust more than £3 million last year. The new service sends a text to patients a week before their appointment, reminding them that it is due to take place. 12 March 2010
  • St Helier Hospital redevelopment takes major step forward Site plan of St Helier Hospital incorporating the new buildingProposals to spend more than £200 million on a much needed redevelopment of St Helier Hospital took a major step forward last night when Sutton Council approved the Trust's outline planning application. The plans include demolishing a large part of the hospital and replacing it with a state-of-the-art building which will house the majority of the hospital's wards and clinics. 11 March 2010
  • Trust appoints new top surgeon Clive Charig, Clinical Director for SurgeryEpsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Clive Charig to lead its surgery directorate. Mr Charig, a surgeon who specialises in treating patients with urology problems, has more than 25 years experience and started with the Trust 1991. Urology includes treating patients with kidney, bladder and prostate problems. 09 March 2010
  • Purley kidney patients get brand new centre Sue Woodcock, lead nurse for renal servicesA new state-of-the-art dialysis centre has opened in Purley, meaning that local kidney (renal) patients can get the treatment they need even closer to their homes. The new Purley satellite centre in Capella Court, Brighton Road allows local kidney patients to use the centre for regular sessions of haemodialysis, rather than having to travel to St Helier Hospital. 08 March 2010
  • Top celebrity advisor wheels in new hospital equipment Max Clifford visits Epsom HospitalPR guru and celebrity advisor, Max Clifford, took time out of his busy schedule recently (1 March) to present £20,000 worth of new equipment to Epsom Hospital. Max met with staff from the main operating theatre to present ten patient transfer trolleys, which were bought for the hospital with a generous donation from the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund. 02 March 2010
  • Let's Dance 4 free Logo Change for Life campaignThe top nurse at Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals is encouraging local people to take part in free dance classes that are being held across south west London and Surrey next weekend (March 6 and 7). The Let's Dance campaign, which is part of Change4Life (the nationwide movement to help us all live healthier, happier and longer lives) has been launched in partnership with the Fitness Industry Association, to get local people dancing their way to fitness. 01 March 2010
