Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Clive Charig to lead its surgery directorate.
Mr Charig, a surgeon who specialises in treating patients with urology problems, has more than 25 years experience and started with the Trust 1991. Urology includes treating patients with kidney, bladder and prostate problems.
As Clinical Director for Surgery, Mr Charig will oversee the running of nine specialties, including: trauma and orthopaedics; ear, nose and throat (ENT); ophthalmology (eye); urology; and, plastic surgery.
Surgery is one of the Trust's largest clinical directorates employing more than 300 staff and with a budget of £20.5 million.
Mr Charig specialises in the diagnosis of early prostate cancer, male fertility and sexual dysfunction. In addition, he has a particular interest in using lasers and other specialist techniques to treat kidney stones, benign prostate disease and bladder cancer, minimising the need for surgery.
Mr Charig said: "I am delighted to take up this appointment and I am looking forward to working with the team to further improve the service we provide to patients.
"We perform approximately 30,000 operations across our three hospitals each year. The large majority are planned, with an increasing number now being performed as day surgery. We also undertake emergency surgery, treating patients who need immediate operations, for instance if they have had an accident."
Mr Charig officially takes up the post on 1 April and replaces Roy Twyman, who was Clinical Director from June 2008.
