A surgeon at St Helier Hospital has thanked local police for their help in getting him to work this morning (30 November 2010) so that he could perform an important operation.

Mr Aziz Anjum, a consultant vascular surgeon at St Helier Hospital, was en route to perform an urgent operation when he was caught in heavy traffic caused by the snow.

Having waited in heavy traffic for nearly two hours, he flagged down a passing police car which took him, under blue lights, safely to St Helier to perform the operation.

The patient had suffered an abdominal aortic aneurysm, where the main artery in the body becomes swollen. It is an extremely serious condition which, if left untreated, can be life-threatening.

Despite the seriousness, the operation went well and the patient is stable. Mr Anjum said: "Full credit to Sutton Police - they were very helpful, kind and professional."

The police officer who helped, Sergeant Dolce said: "It was great to be on the spot at the time and to help with such an important journey."

Samantha Jones, Trust Chief Executive said: "It's times like this that the absolute dedication of the emergency services and healthcare professionals shines through."
