An awards ceremony celebrating the 84 members of Trust staff who have achieved an NVQ (national vocational qualification) this year has taken place.

Staff from across our hospitals, including ward sisters, nurses and other clinical and non-clinical staff were all invited to the celebration and were presented with their award by Director of Human Resources, Michael Burden.

The NVQs were awarded in a range of subjects, including a certificate in plumbing, pharmacy services, medical terminology and management.

Michael said: "As a Trust we are keen to build on the skills and experience of our 4,800 staff and actively encouraging them to take up an NVQ is a great way of doing just that.

"Every single person picking up an NVQ has given up their own time to study for their qualification and it makes me very proud to see such a large number of staff receiving awards in such a varied list of subjects. All of their hard work has now paid off, and the things they have learnt over the past year will undoubtedly help to improve the service we provide to our patients."

Emma Mullany is a personal assistant (PA) to a palliative care consultant at St Helier Hospital and was awarded an NVQ in medical terminology. She said: "I found the studying really educational - I learnt a lot. I've picked up a lot of words throughout my time at work, but it was really helpful to be able to study them and get to know exactly what they mean.

"I've been working for the Trust for six years now and I still find it really rewarding to be involved in improving the care patients receive when they are terminally ill and need support during the last months, weeks or days of their lives. Although I'm not out there on the wards, helping patients face-to-face, I know that the team I work for is really helping people during a very difficult time, and I'm pleased to be able to play a part in that."
