One in nine women in the UK will get breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. As with all cancers, the earlier the condition is found, the better the chance of beating it.

That's why a leading cancer nurse at Epsom and St Helier hospitals is supporting a new iPhone application (app) that encourages women to check their breasts regularly.

iBreastCheck is a free app provided by the UK charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Sarah Wemyss, lead cancer nurse at the Trust, said: "As well as explaining what you should be looking for when you examine your breasts, the app also has a convenient reminder service. I recommend that you set the reminder at monthly intervals so you have the best chance of detecting any cancer quickly.

"I cannot over emphasise the importance of regular breast checking enough. The app's guide to checking your breasts is a great, and convenient, way to learn how to: it helps you understand what changes to look and feel for, so you can pick up when a change does occur, and see your GP to get it checked out.

"It is important to remember that while breast cancer most commonly affects women over 50, it is also the most common form of cancer in those under 35, so all women should learn how to check their breasts.

"If you have an iPhone, why not download the app today? You never know, it could be the best thing your phone will ever do for you. It could even help save your life."

For people who do not have an iPhone, similar information is available on the NHS Choices website.
