Note: Due to lack of interest, the course had to be cancelled.

A free course to help local cancer patients and their loved ones deal with the devastating effects of the disease is set to begin at Epsom Hospital later this month (September).

The eight-week course, called 'Learning to live with cancer', offers practical advice and emotional support to anyone who has been affected by cancer.

Cancer information manager at the Trust, Tarlika Patel, said: "Sadly, cancer touches the lives of many people - young and old - and its effects can be truly devastating.

"This course is for anybody whose life has been touched by cancer, and helps them to explore issues such as how to deal with the diagnosis and any side effects of their treatment. They will also learn about relaxation techniques which can help reduce stress and anxiety.

"Similar courses that we have offered in the past have been a very positive experience for all those involved and we have had good feedback from the people who attended.

"As well as patients, carers, relatives and friends can also attend the course. We aim to offer people a raft of helpful information, including strategies they can use to deal with the illness."

The course will explore other issues, such as the various types of treatment available for cancer, diet and nutrition, talking about cancer, relaxation and art therapy.

The course will run on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm until 4pm from 22 September to 10 November 2010 at the Macmillan Butterfly Centre, Epsom Hospital.

Places are limited, so if you are interested in attending, please contact Pam Battell or Tarlika Patel on 01372 735456 or email tarlika.patel@esth.nhs.uk (before 17 September).
