Patients at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC), which is based at Epsom Hospital, were given a special treat on Saturday (5 March 2011), as World Book Night came to the wards of the renowned unit.

World Book Night, the national initiative that saw one million books given away for free across Britain, was brought to the EOC by passionate reader, Lisa Field, who gave away 48 copies of one of her favourite books, Case Histories by Kate Atkinson.

Lisa was one of 20,000 members of the public chosen from a random draw to take part in the event. She said: "It all went really well. The patients were really pleased to be handed a new book to read, and we even had a few staff members queuing up to get their hands on a copy. We handed out all of our books with ease. In fact, I’m sure we could have done with a few more copies!"

Lisa’s husband Richard, who is a consultant surgeon at the EOC, helped to hand out the books, as did their daughter Daisy. Lisa added: "It was good to have some helping hands with me, and we all enjoyed it so much that we’re already planning to come back again next year."

You can get involved with next year’s event, by registering online.

Lisa added: "It was a privilege to be involved in World Book Night, and I hope it encourages everyone to take a little time out and get reading."
