The MP for Croydon South, Richard Ottaway, visited St Helier Hospital recently (25 March 2011) for a special briefing about plans to spend £219 million redeveloping the site.
As well as viewing the latest designs and drawings for the scheme, Mr Ottaway spent time meeting with staff who are leading the multi-million pound project. He also had a tour of the hospital to see for himself where the money will be spent and to hear how it will help improve the care provided to the hospital's patients.
Mr Ottaway said: "Whilst St Helier Hospital is only used by a small percentage of my constituents, the redevelopment is very important to those that do. I was really impressed with the hospital's plans and it's good to see work progressing at such a pace. The redevelopment promises to make big changes for local people and it is undoubtedly long overdue."
Matthew Hopkins, Trust Chief Executive said: "We were pleased to welcome Richard to St Helier Hospital and to bring him up-to-speed with our plans to radically transform the site. There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes at the moment, getting things ready for the JCBs and builders to come on site. This includes agreeing detailed plans about where services will be moved to during the building works so that we minimise the inconvenience to our patients."
