  • Local hospitals announce Nurse of the Year Left to right Nurse of the Year Matron Maria Paterson, Nursing Support Workers of the Year, healthcare assistants Julia Kitchener and Jeanette Smith, and Nursing Support Worker of the Year runner-up Tracy Weekes.A long-serving matron at Epsom Hospital has been crowned Nurse of the Year at a special ceremony. Maria Paterson, matron for specialty medicine (which includes stroke, respiratory (chest) and cardiology (heart) care) at the hospital, picked up the award at a celebration to mark International Nurses' Day on 12 May. 31 May 2011

The good news follows a comprehensive review of car parking at the Trust, known as 'The Big Conversation'. 25 May 2011

  • 'Children should learn life-saving skills' says senior nurse Young people learn life-savings skills (Photo: BHF)The most senior nurse at Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals is getting behind a new campaign which calls on the Government to add emergency life support skills (such as first aid and resuscitation) to the national curriculum. The initiative, which has been launched by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the British Heart Foundation, aims to get emergency skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation. 17 May 2011

  • From Surrey to the Sahara: Trust doctor volunteers in North African warzone Richard swaps the Elective Orthopaedic Centre for Tataouine Hospital, southern TunisiaA senior surgeon from Epsom and St Helier hospitals recently returned from a two-week mission to a North African warzone. Mr Richard Field, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Epsom Hospital was based at Tataouine regional hospital, located near the Libyan border in southern Tunisia. 12 May 2011

  • Free 'managing the cancer experience' course starts soon Learn about cancer management in a supportive and welcoming environment.A free course to help local cancer patients and their loved ones deal with the shock, upheaval and distress the disease causes is set to begin at Epsom Hospital later this month (May). The seven week programme deals with every aspect of cancer, from the first diagnosis. It includes topics from diet and nutrition to how cancer affects the human body, and from relaxation to complementary therapies. 06 May 2011
  • 'Organ donations rise but we still need more' says senior doctor Renal patient Steve PurcellNew figures show that a record number of people donated vital organs at Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals last year, bringing a new lease of life to a number of people across the region. But now, the Trust's most senior doctor, Medical Director Dr James Clarke, is urging more people to step forward and sign up to the organ donor register. 06 May 2011
