To make sure that we can continue to provide our patients with a high level of care whatever the circumstances, we had robust contingency plans in place. 29 November 2011
  • Epsom, Sutton and St Helier named amongst the country's safest hospitals From top left: The Trust's four hospitals - St Helier Hospital, Epsom Hospital, Sutton Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital for ChildrenEpsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals are amongst the safest in the country, according to an authoritative new report published today (28 November 2011). The hospitals have been named in the Dr Foster Hospital Guide 2011 as having some of the lowest mortality rates in England and Wales. 28 November 2011
  • Local hospital staff face rise in physical assaults Julie Mulligan, sister in A&EFigures released recently (10 November 2011) reveal physical assaults against staff at Epsom, St Helier and Sutton hospitals have risen in the last year. There were 110 physical assaults in the hospitals during 2010-11, compared to 96 in 2009-10, a rise of 14%. 25 November 2011
  • Running for healthy hearts Frances and Dominic just after the marathonBetween them, a sporting couple have run a marathon and a half to raise money for the Cardiac Rehab Centre at Epsom Hospital (where patients with heart conditions are helped to get back on their feet and return to fitness). 24 November 2011

  • Sri Lankan school thanks Trust in style 14-year-old Mallika, a girl who received one of the hearing aids, has painted a painting to say thank you - here presented by Kevin Croft, our Director of People and Organisational DevelopmentLast year (December 2010), Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals donated 55 hearing aids to help children hear in Sri Lanka. The hearing aids, which belonged to patients who now have newer digital models, were taken on the 5,454 mile journey by Carshalton-based charity, Helplanka. They are helping children at the Nuffield Deaf School in Jaffna to hear for the first time. 21 November 2011
  • Hospitals celebrate World Radiography Day Matthew Hopkins meeting with radiographers and lead radiologist Dr Arum Parthipun (fourth from left)Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals recently marked World Radiography Day (8 November 2011) with a week of events celebrating the contribution of radiography to the world of medicine. This included recognising those clinicians who work in the field and provide radiography services to patients on a daily basis. 18 November 2011
  • Keep those memories of St Helier coming! A visit paid to St Helier by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in October 1963 on the occasion of the hospital’s 21st prize-giving for student nurses (Photo: Mrs M G Mackenzie)As work on the £219 million redevelopment of St Helier Hospital continues apace, the Trust is still appealing to former staff to share their memories for an exhibition celebrating the hospital's past. So far, donations have included photos depicting bomb damage from a V2 rocket during World War II and a visit to the nurses' school. 17 November 2011
  • Gigantic banner puts writing on the wall for £219 million redevelopment From left: Project director Tim Wilkins, MP for Sutton and Cheam Paul Burstow, MP for Carshalton and Wallington Tom Brake and Chief Executive Matthew HopkinsSt Helier Hospital took centre stage today (14 November 2011) as local MPs unveiled a gigantic banner celebrating the £219 million redevelopment of the hospital. The banner, which has been mounted to the front of the hospital, is 17.5 metres long and 7.5 metres high, making it almost as long as a 'bendy bus', and as tall as a house. 14 November 2011

  • St Helier Hospital welcomes 1,000th baby to birth centre Mother Sam Davies and daughter ErinThe new birth centre at St Helier Hospital recently reached a major milestone as it celebrated the arrival of its 1,000th baby, Erin Adele Davies, who was born on the stroke of midnight on 29 October 2011. 11 November 2011
  • Anthea Turner cuts ribbon to new £634,000 scanner Staff from the unit, the estates team (who managed the installation of the scanner) and Anthea TurnerTelevision personality Anthea Turner dropped into Epsom Hospital earlier today (10 November 2011), to officially open a new £634,000 CT scanner, which helps clinicians to spot life-threatening conditions faster than ever before. Anthea met with Chief Executive Matthew Hopkins, Chief Operating Officer Karen Breen and key members of staff from the unit, before cutting the ribbon to the new state-of the-art scanner. 10 November 2011
  • £16,000 donation for women with difficult labour Demetri with pelvic floor scannerA charitable donation of £16,000 has funded a brand new, state-of-the-art piece of medical equipment at St Helier Hospital that will help to treat women who have suffered a serious perineal injury during childbirth (where the muscles around the vagina and anus are damaged). 04 November 2011
  • Hundreds attend meetings on St Helier redevelopment Artist's impression of the proposed multi-storey car parkHundreds of local residents, patients, councillors, staff and volunteers attended public exhibitions recently (13 and 21 October 2011) to view the latest designs for the redevelopment of St Helier Hospital. Before making detailed planning applications to the council, the team in charge of the £219 million project unveiled the latest plans for the very first time. 04 November 2011
