As work on the £219 million redevelopment of St Helier Hospital continues apace, the Trust is still appealing to former staff to share their memories for an exhibition celebrating the hospital's past.

So far, donations have included photos depicting bomb damage from a V2 rocket during World War II and a visit to the nurses' school (formerly housed in the soon to be demolished Ferguson House) by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, in 1959. A local resident whose aunt worked at the hospital has also donated a special menu for patients on the day of the current monarch's Coronation in June 1953 (including bacon rolls, stuffed roast turkey and coffee cream gateau).

Former members of staff and local residents have also shared anecdotes, including the account of the rocket strike, but also details about nights out in Carshalton (after which the nurses would be given a police escort home) and the difficulties of carrying out romantic liaisons whilst living in the nurses' accommodation.

Matthew Hopkins, the Trust's Chief Executive, said: "We've had a great response so far but I am sure there are others out there with stories to tell or mementoes to share. Some of the insights into the past are truly fascinating.

"We've had photographs, leaflets, newspaper clippings, even a programme for the visit of HRH Princess Diana in 1988. Just by looking at the mementoes we've received, it's clear that St Helier has a rich history - and I'm sure there is more out there."
