Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is pleased to announce the reappointment of Professor David Oliveira as a non-executive director serving on the Trust Board.
Professor Oliveira is a renal physician and was appointed to the position of Professor of Renal Medicine at St George's Hospital Medical School in 1995. He first joined the Trust as a non-executive director in 2004, an appointment he has held ever since.
A former clinical director of the renal department at St George's Hospital, Professor Oliveira has also published extensive research on immunosuppressants (drugs that dampen down the body's immune system, which can be used in order to help the body accept a transplanted organ) and other aspects of treatment in renal medicine.
Upon receiving news of his reappointment, Professor Oliveira said: "The NHS is an organisation I feel very passionately about, so I'm very pleased to be continuing my work with Epsom, St Helier and Sutton hospitals.
"As a working consultant myself I am committed to ensuring that the Trust’s hospitals are safe, comfortable environments where patients receive excellent clinical care. The clinical performance of Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals is impressive, and credit is due to all members of staff who contribute towards that achievement. Having said that, there is always room to do more.”
Laurence Newman, Interim Trust Chairman, said: "I am delighted that David has been re-appointed to the Trust Board. This is an exciting time for our hospitals, with many competing challenges and opportunities. David's experience of working with the Trust, combined with his work outside, will help no end as we move forward."
Professor Oliveira's appointment has been managed by the Appointments Commission. All non-executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations there is a requirement for public appointee' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Professor Oliveira has not declared any political or other interests and does not hold any ministerial appointments. This appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice.
Professor Oliveira's re-appointment means his new term will run from 1 January 2012 to 31 March 2013. This post is remunerated at £6,096 per annum.
Professor Oliveira lives in Kingston-upon-Thames.
