  • One patient every four minutes - A&E units mark busiest ever year Accident and emergency departmentThe A&E departments at Epsom and St Helier hospitals were busier than ever during 2011-12, with over 137,000 patients seen and treated during the year - that's an average of 374 patients every single day. 3,497 extra patients attended the two A&Es during the year, which is 2.6% more than 2010-11, when 133,597 were treated. 17 April 2012
  • 'Good for our patients, good for the planet' hospital meals win London award Good Food on the Public Plate awardThe catering team at Epsom and St Helier Hospitals received a prestigious Good Food on the Public Plate award on Thursday (15 March), in recognition of their commitment to serving healthy and sustainable meals to patients, staff and visitors in the hospitals' restaurants. 22 March 2012
  • St Helier given clean bill of health by health watchdog St Helier Hospital entranceSt Helier Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children have passed a review undertaken by health watchdog the Care Quality Commission with flying colours. The review, which was published yesterday, shows that during three unannounced inspections of the hospitals, the CQC found that patients were respected and involved in their care, that patients were given safe and appropriate treatment and that the food and drink provided for patients met their dietary needs. 13 February 2012
  • Trust's maternity units meeting high safety standards NeonatalMidwives, nurses, doctors and support staff in the maternity units at both Epsom and St Helier hospitals were celebrating last week (9 February 2012) after learning that they had achieved key safety standards in the way that they deliver care to parents-to-be. The Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts has awarded both units the level 2 standard, which indicates that patients can expect to receive a high level of care in a safe environment. 13 February 2012

  • Local hospital staff face rise in physical assaults Julie Mulligan, sister in A&EFigures released recently (10 November 2011) reveal physical assaults against staff at Epsom, St Helier and Sutton hospitals have risen in the last year. Last year, the Trust launched a comprehensive review of car parking known as 'The Big Conversation', to find out how its car parks could be improved, while still keeping them safe, accessible and fair for the hundreds of thousands of people that use them each year. 03 March 2011
  • Newborn babies in safe hands at the Trust Dr Rim El-rifaiNew figures from a national report show that premature and newborn babies born at Epsom and St Helier hospitals are receiving some of the best care in the country. The report, published by the Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries, shows that the death rate of newborns delivered at our hospitals was significantly less than the national average. 18 January 2011

The data shows that between September and November 2009, there were 17 cases across the Trust's hospitals, compared to 29 during the same period in 2008 - a drop of 41 per cent. 28 January 2010
  • Trust passes watchdog's unannounced inspection Hands at soap dispenserEpsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust has been declared fully compliant with the Care Quality Commission's 'Hygiene Code' following an unannounced inspection on 5 November. The code, part of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, lays down the law in setting out the actions NHS trusts must take to ensure patients are cared for in a clean environment, where the risks of healthcare acquired infections, like MRSA and C. difficile, are kept as low as possible. 18 November 2009

  • Number of C. difficile cases cut by 20 per cent Peter ColesThe number of cases of C. difficile at Sutton, Epsom and St Helier hospitals has dropped by more than 20 per cent, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Agency. The new figures show that between April to June 2009, 67 patients were found to have the infection, which is also known as Clostridium difficile. This is an improvement on the figure for the same period in 2008, when there were 85 cases - a drop of more than a fifth. 18 September 2009
