  • Surgeon builds bridges in Malawi with Operation Hernia Mr Thomas demonstrates surgical techniques to a group of medics at Thyolo District Hospital, southern Malawi.A senior surgeon from Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals has returned from a mission to Malawi which aimed to improve the way patients with hernias are operated on in what is one of the world's least economically developed countries. Consultant general surgeon Mr Paul Thomas, along with registrar Ms Caris Grimes, spent two and a half weeks stationed primarily at Thyolo District Hospital in the south of the country. 12 October 2011
  • Eye clinic unveils new 'quiet room' at Sutton Hospital Friends, family and former colleagues at the opening of Ellie's Room, Sutton Hospital.Nurses and their colleagues, friends and relatives came together at Sutton Hospital last month (May) to unveil a brand new 'quiet room' at the eye clinic. The room has been specially designed to give patients the privacy they may need when coming to terms with bad news. 09 June 2011
  • From Surrey to the Sahara: Trust doctor volunteers in North African warzone Richard swaps the Elective Orthopaedic Centre for Tataouine Hospital, southern TunisiaA senior surgeon from Epsom and St Helier hospitals recently returned from a two-week mission to a North African warzone. Mr Richard Field, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Epsom Hospital was based at Tataouine regional hospital, located near the Libyan border in southern Tunisia. 12 May 2011
  • Support from doctors for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Even healthy men should consider booking a prostate examination once they reach their fifties.Top doctors at Epsom and St Helier hospitals are backing Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and are urging men to take their health seriously. On average, one in nine men will experience prostate cancer during their lifetime. Currently around a quarter of a million men are living with the disease in the UK and by the end of the year another 37,000 will be diagnosed. It is the most common form of cancer in men - and this year alone, 10,000 men will die as a consequence. 23 March 2011
  • Trust surgeon teaches ITV1 star tips of the trade Michelle Asante and Pieter Le RouxA star of ITV1's major new drama series, Monroe, prepared for her role in the show by spending time with a surgical team from Epsom and St Helier hospitals. Actress Michelle Asante, who plays shy junior doctor Kitty Wilson in the primetime medical drama, shadowed one of the Trust's leading surgeons. 03 March 2011
  • Surgery unit goes under the knife in £2.5 million transformation An operating theatreThe day surgery unit at Epsom Hospital is being completely overhauled following a huge £2.5 million cash injection. The multi-million pound project, funded by the Trust's £10 million capital development programme, means the day surgery and endoscopy unit (where patients' digestive and respiratory systems are examined using miniscule cameras) will be transformed into a state-of-the-art treatment centre housing the latest equipment and technology. 07 February 2011
  • £10,000 donation gives trainee surgeons a look through the keyhole Matthew Hopkins, Chief ExecutiveTrainee surgeons at Epsom Hospital can now practice complex 'keyhole' techniques using state-of-the-art simulators, thanks to a charity which supports the hospital's work. Epsom Medical Equipment Fund officially presented two cutting edge laparoscopy (keyhole) simulators, which cost £5,000 each, to the hospital last Wednesday (19 January). 26 January 2011
  • Chelsea FC legend gives extra time for hospital charity Allan Harris presents one of the scopesRetired Chelsea and Barcelona footballer Allan Harris dropped into Epsom Hospital last Wednesday (3 November) to present the ear, nose and throat team with two brand new pieces of medical equipment. Allan, who lives in nearby Ashtead and has coached international superstars including Diego Maradona and Paul Gascoigne, spent time chatting to hospital staff before officially presenting them with two portable nasal endoscopes. 08 November 2010

The new investment, which has been funded by the Trust's annual capital programme, means that more patients will be able to get the treatment they need, faster than ever before. 27 October 2010
  • Centre of Pain Education helping patients to COPE Dr Hilary Rankin, clinical lead and consultant clinical psychologist, COPENew figures show that the Trust's Centre of Pain Education (COPE) is significantly improving the way people who suffer from chronic pain are able to deal with their condition. And, on average, patients are reporting a 14% decrease in the amount of pain they suffered before and after using COPE's services. 18 October 2010
  • Trust set to star in ITV1 documentary Nicola RobertsonA brand new documentary that followed three of the Trust's trainee surgeons for eight months as they started work at Epsom, Sutton and St Helier Hospitals is set to be broadcast on ITV1 next week. Starting on 6 September at 10.35pm on ITV1, Surgery School is a three part, fly-on-the-wall documentary that will give viewers a unique behind-the-scenes look at the pressurised environment in which surgeons work. 27 August 2010
  • Trust expert warns local people to keep an eye out for glaucoma Lynn Ring, clinical nurse specialistAn eye expert from Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is warning local people of the dangers of glaucoma, a condition which can cause blindness.   • Trust appoints new top surgeon Clive Charig, Clinical Director for SurgeryEpsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Clive Charig to lead its surgery directorate. Mr Charig, a surgeon who specialises in treating patients with urology problems, has more than 25 years experience and started with the Trust 1991.
