  • Forever Friends - hospital charity celebrates another successful year Volunteers and VIPs gathering before the eventThe dedicated charity for St Helier and Sutton hospitals looked back at another year of hard work and committed fundraising last week (8 May 2012), as they held their 59th Annual General Meeting. A crowd of volunteers and VIPs gathered for the St Helier and Sutton League of Friends yearly meeting, including Absolutely Fabulous actress and charity President June Whitfield and the Mayor of Sutton Cllr Gerry Jerome. 16 May 2012
  • Sea Scouts take to the air on hospital radio Scouts talking to EOC patient John SparkesA group of sea scouts took to the airwaves of Epsom Hospital Radio recently (16 March 2012) after they visited patients at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC), which is based at the hospital. 29 March 2012
  • We're on the move! New £53,000 mobile x-ray unit at Epsom Hospital Arman Medina from our diagnostic imaging department and Gary Carey, Mark Buckton, Mike Wigley from SECamb.It's taken a 72-mile sponsored walk and weeks of fundraising, but thanks to the hard work of Epsom Medical Equipment Fund and 17 members of staff from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECamb), a new mobile x-ray unit has arrived at Epsom Hospital. 19 January 2012
  • £16,000 donation for women with difficult labour Demetri with pelvic floor scannerA charitable donation of £16,000 has funded a brand new, state-of-the-art piece of medical equipment at St Helier Hospital that will help to treat women who have suffered a serious perineal injury during childbirth (where the muscles around the vagina and anus are damaged). 04 November 2011
  • Local MP gets hospital 'Brake-dancing' Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, in the studioThe MP for Carshalton and Wallington, Tom Brake, took time out from his busy schedule on 14 October 2011 to present a show on Radio St Helier. Tom joined forces with Radio St Helier volunteers, including station manager Kevin Horkan and presenter Chris Money, to take part in the light music show - a mixture of music, patient requests and current affairs. 24 October 2011

The new ultrasound scanner, which was funded by the St Helier and Sutton League of Friends, can be used to examine any part of the body and help diagnose a wide range of illnesses. 07 October 2011

The special event, which took place in the Queen's Stand at Epsom Racecourse, saw a crowd of hospital volunteers enjoy cakes, sandwiches and even a spot of dancing. 06 October 2011

  • Minister of State spins the discs at Radio St Helier Paul Burstow in the studioPaul Burstow, the MP for Sutton and Cheam and the Minister of State for Care Services, took some time out of his busy schedule recently (25 May 2011) to co-present a show on Radio St Helier. Coming straight from Parliament, where he had just listened to President Barack Obama give a historic speech to both the House of Lords and the House of Commons, Mr Burstow joined forces with the team of volunteers who run the in-house radio station at St Helier Hospital. 07 June 2011

  • £200,000 x-ray room opens at Epsom Hospital The Right Honourable Lord Ashley of Stoke (front centre) officially opens the new unit at an event attended by Trust staff and volunteers, including Dr Geoffrey Robb (2nd left, back) Chairman of the Friends, and Charlotte Hamilton (3rd left, back), tA new £200,000 x-ray room at Epsom Hospital was officially opened in front of a crowd of patients, visitors, staff, volunteers and VIPs recently. The facility - which was generously funded by the hospital's League of Friends - houses a brand new specialist unit which can take up to 15 images per second to create a moving image of a patient's insides. 03 March 2011

  • £10,000 donation gives trainee surgeons a look through the keyhole Matthew Hopkins, Chief ExecutiveTrainee surgeons at Epsom Hospital can now practice complex 'keyhole' techniques using state-of-the-art simulators, thanks to a charity which supports the hospital's work. Epsom Medical Equipment Fund officially presented two cutting edge laparoscopy (keyhole) simulators, which cost £5,000 each, to the hospital last Wednesday (19 January). 26 January 2011
  • Monitoring the Mayor - new equipment unveiled at Epsom Hospital Tracy Reeman, cllr Smitherham and Dr Ruth CharltonThe Mayor of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, Cllr Clive Smitherham, visited Epsom Hospital recently to officially unveil two new monitors which cost £1,500. The 'comfort cuff' monitors, which have been donated to the hospital by the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund, will help to monitor patients' blood pressures, oxygen levels and heart rate. 16 December 2010
  • Chelsea FC legend gives extra time for hospital charity Allan Harris presents one of the scopesRetired Chelsea and Barcelona footballer Allan Harris dropped into Epsom Hospital last Wednesday (3 November) to present the ear, nose and throat team with two brand new pieces of medical equipment. Allan, who lives in nearby Ashtead and has coached international superstars including Diego Maradona and Paul Gascoigne, spent time chatting to hospital staff before officially presenting them with two portable nasal endoscopes. 08 November 2010
  • Tea party celebrates hospital volunteers Volunteer tea party 2010A tea party to celebrate and thank the 428 volunteers who regularly give up their time to support Epsom, St Helier and Sutton hospitals was held at Epsom Racecourse recently. Every hospital volunteer was invited by the Trust to the annual event, which took place in the prestigious Queen's Stand at the racecourse. 19 October 2010
  • New hospital shop is 'Absolutely Fabulous' June Whitfield with chair Val Brundle and volunteer Tony WaldronThe League of Friends shop in St Helier Hospital has been officially re-opened by 'Ab Fab' actress June Whitfield following a £65,000 refurbishment. The shop, which sells magazines, books, sandwiches, gifts and many other items, has been extended so that patients, visitors and staff can choose from a wider selection of goods. 08 October 2010
  • Hospital chaplains hold baby memorial service Revd Sarah SewellA memorial service for people who have been affected by the loss of a baby has been organised by the chaplains at Epsom, St Helier and Sutton hospitals. The annual service will take place on Sunday 3 October 2010 at 3pm in St Nicholas Church, St Nicholas Way, Sutton, SM1 2RG. 24 September 2010
  • 'Learning to live with cancer' course to begin shortly Tarlika Patel, Macmillan cancer information managerA free course to help local cancer patients and their loved ones deal with the devastating effects of the disease is set to begin at Epsom Hospital later this month (September). The eight-week course, called 'Learning to live with cancer', offers practical advice and emotional support to anyone who has been affected by cancer. 09 September 2010

  • Fitness fans going the distance for newborn babies Brian Wright in actionTwo fitness fanatics will each do three marathons in one day to raise money for the neonatal unit at St Helier hospital next Saturday (5 June). Personal trainer at LA Fitness in Banstead, Brian Wright and his client Richard Tait, are both preparing to row 26 miles, cycle 26 miles and run 26 miles for the cause - a staggering total of 78 miles each. 01 June 2010

Staff at the pub organised 12 special fundraising evenings, which included a James Bond theme night, to purchase a television for the ward. 27 May 2010

  • Butterfly boosted by £1,500 'big band' cheque Information and Support Manager, Teresa Howes; Clinical Director of cancer services, Dr Lydia Jones; John Chamberlain; Mick Martin; Cancer services manager, Julia Sinclair and information manager, Tarlika PatelMembers of the Nonsuch Rotary Club dropped into The Macmillan Butterfly Centre at Epsom Hospital recently to say thank you to the service and drop off a bumper £1,500 cheque. President John Chamberlain and President (elect) Mick Martin visited the centre, which provides support, advice and complementary therapies to cancer patients and their loved ones, to donate the generous sum. 14 April 2010

  • Top celebrity advisor wheels in new hospital equipment Max Clifford visits Epsom HospitalPR guru and celebrity advisor, Max Clifford, took time out of his busy schedule recently (1 March) to present £20,000 worth of new equipment to Epsom Hospital. Max met with staff from the main operating theatre to present ten patient transfer trolleys, which were bought for the hospital with a generous donation from the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund. 02 March 2010
  • Paintings donated to hospital in memory of 'loving mother' From left: sister Kim Lee, Stephanie Newark, senior staff nurse Janice Smith and the creator of the painting, Jan CheesemanThe daughter of a patient at Epsom Hospital has collected and donated 50 paintings to the hospital in memory of her mother. Stephanie Newark from Epsom decided to donate paintings to be hung in the single rooms in the wards of the hospital following the sad death of her 91 year old mother, Olive, who was a patient at Epsom several times and who spent much of her time there in single rooms. 02 February 2010
  • Jimmy Tarbuck has surgeons in stitches during hospital visit Jimmy Tarbuck OBE, with staff and Bess Harding, the fund co-ordinator (right)British comedian, Jimmy Tarbuck OBE, popped in to Epsom Hospital last week (28 October) to present staff in the operating theatres with a brand new piece of equipment. Known as a camera stack, the machine is used in performing keyhole surgery. It cost £42,000 and was donated to the hospital by the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund. 10 November 2009
  • News just in - Sir Trevor McDonald visits hospital Sir Trevor McDonald paid a special visit to Epsom Hospital last week to officially present a new piece of equipment to the histology department.The news presenter and broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald visited Epsom Hospital on Tuesday (20 October) to present a brand new piece of equipment to the histopathology department. Sir Trevor visited the Trust to present a writer machine - a state-of-the-art device that prints a unique patient identification number and barcode on tissue samples - on behalf of the Epsom Medical Equipment Fund. 28 October 2009

  • Help is at hand for hearing-impaired patients One of the hearing loops in St Helier Hospital's main receptionLocal residents who are hearing-impaired are likely to find communicating with staff at Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals easier from now on. That's because the Disability Information Centre Epsom (DICE) - a service based at Epsom Hospital - has recently purchased three portable hearing loops for patients to use when visiting the hospitals. 24 April 2009
  • High Sheriff comes under pressure at Epsom Hospital High Sheriff of Surrey visiting the new neutral pressure room at Epsom HospitalThe High Sheriff of Surrey 2008-09, Sally Varah, visited Epsom Hospital recently to officially open the hospital's new cutting-edge neutral pressure room, which cost nearly million pounds. The room means that patients with severe respiratory illnesses, such as tuberculosis (TB) can be isolated from other people, preventing it from spreading to other patients. 22 April 2009

  • Friends donate £20,000 scanner to protect patients from DVT A state of the art portable scanner used to help detect Deep Vein Thrombolysis (DVT) and a range of other conditions has been donated to the Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU) at St Helier Hospital. The CAU is used to assess patients with emergency conditions before they are then either discharged or referred to a specialist ward for treatment. 01 December 2008

  • Thousands raised by volunteers for new scanner Epsom Hospital's ante-natal unit is the proud owner of a brand new £25,000 ultrasound scanner thanks to the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS). The portable device, known as a Sonosite Micromaxx scanner, checks the positioning of unborn babies and can help identify abnormalities. 05 December 2008
