Blood storage refrigerator: The Scientist is preparing cross-matched blood for a patient needing a transfusion.

The blood transfusion service provides a range of blood and blood products, performs antenatal screening and other specialist testing for the Trust and external healthcare professionals.

It also advises clinicians on the appropriate use of this limited resource.

The department supports a range of medical specialities including the Elective Orthopaedic Centre, foetal medicine unit, accident and emergency departments, and maternity units.

This service is assessed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

  • Maximum surgical blood order schedule For each operation the number of units normally crossmatched is shown below. Larger amounts will only be crossmatched after discussion with the transfusion laboratory.
  • Blood transfusion policy The blood transfusion policy aims to ensure that Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust maintains standards for clinical transfusion practice that are based on national guidelines and recommendations, and meets the requirements of the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (SI 2005/50).
