24-hour urine collection

You will be supplied with a specimen container that holds 2 litres (4.5 pints) If you expect to produce more urine than that in the 24 hours of your collection, please ask for a second container. Please do not use a container of your own, as it will not be suitable.

Please do not empty the container or wash it out - it has been specially cleaned and in some cases may contain a necessary preservative. The preservative may contain acid so please take care - if you spill any wash the spillage away immediately with plenty of water.

You will probably find it more convenient to start the collection when you get up in the morning.

Start collecting your urine the second time you empty your bladder. Do not include the first urine in your collection but please record the time of this as your start time. After this time all the urine you pass should be put into the container until the next day, at the same time. On the second day of collection try to collect your last sample at the same time of day as your start time. This means you will have collected your urine over a full 24-hour period.

During the 24 hour collection period it is best if the container is stored away from direct heat (such as radiators or heaters) but there is no need to specially cool it.

Please ensure that the container is clearly labelled with your surname, forename, date of birth, the dates of collection and the start and finish times.

Please check that the lid is firmly screwed onto the container. The container and the request form should be placed in the bag provided. Note that if urine leaks out of the container in transit then the collection will be invalidated and the test will need to be repeated.
