Instructions for collection of semen sample

No ejaculation for 2-7 days prior to producing a sample for analysis.

Wash you hands and penis thoroughly.

Do not use any lubricant and do not produce the sample into a condom.

Masturbate into the sterile bottle provided, taking care to collect the whole ejaculate (the first part often contains the most sperm).

Write name, date and time on the bottle. Insert the bottle into the sealable section of the plastic bag provided. The accompanying form should be inserted into the open sleeve of the bag.

Bring the specimen to the pathology laboratory within one hour. Keep the sample warm by putting in your pocket during the journey.

If a second sample is requested by the doctor, please wait ten weeks before providing it.
Samples will only be analysed if brought to the pathology laboratory between 9am and 3.30 pm Monday to Friday (not on Bank Holidays).

St Helier Hospital
The semen samples are tested in the microbiology laboratory. Please deliver the sample to the pathology reception on the first floor of D block.
Epsom Hospital
The semen samples are tested in the haematology laboratory. Please deliver the sample to the pathology reception on the ground floor of Headley wing.
General advice
It is important to keep the sample warm until it is delivered to the laboratory.
If you are unable to deliver the specimen to the pathology laboratory within one hour of production, a room may be provided for you in the gynaecology department at St Helier Hospital.
