Latest technology assists nurse to deliver patient care

The medicine directorate includes audiology, cardiology, care of the elderly, diabetes, endocrinology, dermatology, gastroenterology, neurology, respiratory, rheumatology and stroke services.

  • Accident and emergency services (A&E) The Trust provides 24-hour accident and emergency facilities at both the Epsom and St Helier hospital sites. Both emergency departments are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is also a dedicated paediatric A&E area on both hospital sites, where children under the age of 16 are seen.
  • Audiology (ear) The audiology and audiological medicine department manages and provides treatment for conditions such as tinnitus, dizziness and other hearing difficulties.
  • Cardiology (heart) The cardiology department offers inpatient and outpatient treatment for patients with coronary heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure and any other heart problems.
  • Care of the elderly The care of the elderly departments at Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital sees all patients over the age of 75 for all medical conditions referred by GPs or other referring consultants.
  • Acute medical and clinical assessment units There is a medical assessment unit at Epsom Hospital and a clinical assessment unti at St Helier Hospital. Patients are sent to these units from A&E or can be referred directly by their GP.
  • Dermatology (skin) The dermatology team comprises five consultants, specialist nursing staff, a specialist registrar, clinical assistants and a community dermatology nurse specialist. We provide treatment and care for a wide range of skin conditions.
  • Diabetes This specialist team provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary diabetes service, which is based in purpose-built diabetes centres at St Helier Hospital and at Epsom Hospital.
  • Endocrinology (hormones) The endocrinology department provides a comprehensive specialist endocrinology service for patients with conditions caused by hormonal problems.
  • Gastroenterology The gastroenterology department deals with all aspects of general gastroenterology (digestive system) and hepatology (liver) in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Genito-urinary medicine (sexual health) The genito-urinary medicine department, located at St Helier Hospital, is available to anyone wanting advice and information about all areas of sexual health.
  • Neurophysiology The department aims to provide an efficient, effective and professional service in clinical neurophysiology, and offers an extensive range of investigations.
  • Respiratory services (airways clinic) The airways clinic team targets patients with chronic lung conditions.
  • Rheumatology The rheumatology department looks after people who suffer from diseases affecting their joints, bones and muscles.
  • Stroke and transient ischaemic attack service There are 18 stroke unit beds at both Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital, providing acute and rehabilitation stroke care. Both units have a stroke physician, specialist nurse, dietitian and full therapy team.
  • Liaison psychiatry service The liaison psychiatry service assesses and manages mental health problems arising in the general hospital, including the emergency department. The team of doctors and nurses provides a mental health service for patients of St Helier Hospital.
  • Physiotherapy Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession which sees human movement as central to the health and well-being of individuals. Physiotherapists identify and maximise movement potential through health promotion, preventive healthcare, treatment and rehabilitation.
  • Podiatry Podiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower leg.
