Cardiac rehabilitation

The cardiac rehabilitation programme is designed for those people who have suffered a recent heart attack (myocardial infarction) and/or have undergone coronary intervention: stent or heart surgery (including valve surgery).

It involves:

  • individual assessment of risk factors

  • education

  • support for the patient and family

  • a hospital-based, structured and supervised exercise programme of between four and eight weeks (one session per week).

The team consists of a cardiac rehabilitation clinical nurse specialist, who has overall responsibility for the service, and a senior physiotherapist responsible for the exercise prescription component.

A pharmacist, dietician and clinical psychologist also contribute to the educational sessions.
