Endocrinology (hormones)

The department provides a comprehensive specialist endocrinology service for patients with conditions caused by hormonal problems. There are outpatient clinics at both St Helier Hospital and Epsom Hospital.

We carry out a full range of dynamic and other complex investigations on a day-case or outpatient basis at a dedicated medical investigation unit at St Helier Hospital.

his is supported by the Trust's chemical pathology and immunology services; we also have excellent endocrine imaging services including ultrasound, CT and MRI scanning, and nuclear medicine. We work closely with surgical colleagues within the Trust, the department of neurosurgery at St George's Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital.

We manage inpatients who are admitted because of endocrine emergencies or who are found to have new endocrine problems. We also provide a consultation service for other inpatients with endocrine disorders.

We deal with a wide range of endocrine and metabolic disorders, including:

  • thyroid diseases

  • polycystic ovary syndrome

  • hirsutism

  • virilisation

  • male and female hypogonadism

  • calcium disorders

  • disorders of the adrenal glands

  • endocrine hypertension

  • hypoglycaemia

  • obesity

  • pituitary tumours

  • genetic endocrine conditions.
