Liaison psychiatry service

The liaison psychiatry service assesses and manages mental health problems arising in the general hospital, including the emergency department.

These include:

  • self harm

  • complex problems related to alcohol and substance misuse

  • mood disorders in the context of physical illness

  • complex confusional states (delirium and dementia)

  • behavioural problems related to psychological issues (e.g. poor adherence to treatment, brain injury)

  • complex assessments of capacity

  • eating disorders

  • ante- and post-natal mental health problems.

Referrals

Referrals for inpatients and patients in the emergency department are made as follows:

  1. 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, by paging the Liaison Psychiatry team on Bleep 167.

  2. Out-of-hours, referrals should be made to the Duty Psychiatrist at Sutton Hospital via St Helier Hospital switchboard (020 8296 2000).

Please note that patients of Epsom Hospital should be referred to the psychiatric service serving that site.

The St Helier Liaison Psychiatry Service does not accept referrals from primary care. GP referral, including emergency referrals, should be made directly to the community psychiatric services:

  1. In-hours, 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, referrals should be made to the community mental health team aligned dot the practice.

  2. Out-of-hours, referrals should be made to the Duty Psychiatrist at Sutton Hospital via St Helier Hospital switchboard (020 8296 2000).

Referrals
