General information about the renal department

This section contains general information about the renal department, including facilities, staff, locations, research and education.

  • Our facilities The renal unit at St Helier Hospital comprises seven key areas: chronic haemodialysis, acute haemodialysis (three wards), peritoneal dialysis, procedures room and the outpatient's area.
  • Our locations The philosophy of care is to deliver as much care as possible close to the patient's home. Therefore, although the main unit is at St Helier Hospital, we support five other haemodialysis satellite units and fifteen different outreach clinics across south west London and the Surrey areas.
  • Our staff The renal unit is staffed by 13 consultant nephrologists, two tiers of junior doctors, renal nurses including a number of clinical nurse specialists, and a number of dedicated support staff, including a renal specialist pharmacist, social worker and dieticians.
  • Infection control in the renal unit The renal unit set up an infection control strategy in 2007. This was to reduce the rates of hospital acquired infections contracted by patients who were being cared for in our unit.
  • Renal education programmes The in-house renal nursing education programme ensures that renal nurses are fully trained to give the best care and support to our patients. We are an Investor in People and encourage and support continuing professional development for all our staff.
  • Renal Research Institute The Renal Unit at St Helier Hospital has a dedicated renal research institute performing basic renal research, and translational (bench to bedside) research which is clinically driven. The emphasis of the research is to assess factors causing progression of chronic kidney disease.
  • St Helier and Surrey Kidney Patients Association Information about the St Helier and Surrey Kidney Patients Association and what they do for the Trust.
