Pain management

Pain is mostly associated with surgery, trauma or acute illnesses such as sickle cell crises, acute pancreatitis, acute ischaemia and longer term illnesses such as cancer and chronic pain, for example, chronic pancreatitis, pelvic pain, back pain, ischaemic leg pain and musculo-skeletal pain.

Investigations

When necessary, investigations take place to establish a diagnosis and an appropriate treatment strategy. Full facilities are available for most investigations to start immediately following a first consultation.

Non-urgent specialist investigations (for example, CT, MRI and ultrasound scanning) are arranged directly with the relevant departments, and often require a second hospital visit.

Prescribing

When prescribing is required, the team ensures patients and their GPs are clear about  the rationale, mode of action, side effects and dose of analgesics prescribed. We aim to offer as much choice as possible when prescribing pain relief.

  • Pain management for inpatients The pain team supports ward staff with providing patient controlled analgesia (PCA) and epidural pain relief. The pain team is usually available to trouble-shoot pain problems throughout the day.
  • Pain management for outpatients An outpatient pain service, based at Sutton Hospital, is available for patients suffering long-term persistent or chronic pain.
  • Centre of pain education At the centre of pain education (COPE), we aim to help people cope with the challenges and difficulties that living with chronic pain brings. The service we offer includes a half day introductory education programme, multidisciplinary assessment, an eight week group pain management programme, or individual programmes and therapy.
