Gynaecology waiting area at St Helier Hospital

Gynaecology is concerned with the female genital tract and its disorders. In many areas, the specialties of gynaecology and obstetrics overlap.

Gynaecology has been considered to end at 28 weeks gestation, but practically there is no clear cut-off.

There are seven consultant-led clinics run within this section:

  • General gynaecology (e.g. menopausal symptoms)

  • Urogynaecology (bladder control)

  • Scanning (e.g. trans-vaginal scan)

  • Oncology (cancer)

  • Urgent gynaecology referrals

  • Pre-clerking

  • Subfertility (e.g. assisted conception)

The consultants are supported by sister, staff nurses, healthcare assistants and support staff, including a counselling service. The consultant's team may also include registrars, senior house officers, staff grades, and medical and nursing students.

There are also nurse-led clinics for smears and the injection of Zoladex.

  • Colposcopy Colposcopy is a microscopic examination of the cervix (the neck of the womb) and can also check the vagina and vulva (external opening of vagina). The examination usually lasts between 10-15 minutes.
  • Oncology If you have been referred to St Helier Hospital by your GP with suspected cancer, you will initially be assessed in the "two-week rule" clinic.
  • Assisted conception unit The assisted conception unit (ACU) at St Helier Hospital prides itself on being a small, enthusiastic and professional team, offering a very personalised and sensitive service to couples who are having problems conceiving.
  • Urgent referrals Sister Melanie Hobbs is in charge of the gynaecology outpatients at St Helier Hospital.
  • Urogynaecology Urogynaecology is the study and successful treatment of women's bladder problems.
  • Laparoscopy This procedure takes about 25 minutes and means looking inside your tummy with a telescope.
