Assisted conception unit

Meet the team of the assisted conception unit

Helping you to create your family

The assisted conception unit (ACU) at St Helier Hospital prides itself on being a small, enthusiastic and professional team, offering a very personalised and sensitive service to couples who are having problems conceiving.

Located within the women's health building at St Helier Hospital, all the related expert departments are on-hand when needed, including the ante-natal clinic, delivery suites and neonatal unit. It is only the embryology that is handled by another hospital.

Following a referral from your GP, treatment is available to you in one of two ways: either NHS funded, depending on PCT budgets, or self-funded, where NHS costs are passed on to you at cost by the hospital (non-profit-making). Both options are, of course, subject to the necessary paperwork and tests to confirm the couples' suitability for treatment.

Assisted conception encompasses a wide range of treatments from ovulation induction, timed coitus, Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI), Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).

  • Transport In Vitro Fertilisation IVF is a highly specialised infertility treatment, requiring frequent hospital visits. Transport IVF has been set up at St Helier Hospital, in association with two other hospitals in central London, to try to reduce the amount of travelling for people in the local area at a time of emotional stress.
  • In Vitro Fertilisation treatment cycle Detailed information about the In Vitro Fertilisation treatment cycle which follows three steps: egg collection, In Vitro Fertilisation and embryo transfer.
  • Ovulation Induction and Intra Uterine Insemination An outline of Ovulation Induction and Intra Uterine Insemination treatments
  • Egg freezing The first baby born in the UK following treatment using a frozen and thawed egg was in 2002. This process is still new and the numbers of cycles performed relatively small. At St Helier we are currently performing egg freezing and storage in partnership with the Bridge Embryologists and frozen eggs are stored in Bridge Cryoservices.
  • The medication To increase the chance of success, and to make management of the treatment cycle easier both for you and the medical team, a combination of drugs will be used.
  • Funding your treatment There are two types of funding available to you: either NHS funding or from your own pocket (self funding).
  • Our partners More information about other ACU departments: King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, The Bridge Fertility Centre for self-funding patients and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority .
  • What our patients say Amid all the facts and figures, it's worth taking time to read what it's like to go through the IVF treatment programme.
