Nicola and Stuart

Nicola and Stuart had been trying for a baby for more than a year when they were referred to St Helier Hospital for further tests and treatment at the hospital's Assisted Conception Unit (ACU).

Nicola said: "We were desperate for a baby and had been trying for about 14 months before we visited our GP. We had some routine blood tests done, and were referred to St Helier Hospital for more tests and investigations.

"None of the experience was particularly easy, but waiting for the results of the investigations was by far and away the hardest thing to cope with. We had no idea what those results were going to be and what they would mean for our family. Waiting for them was incredibly difficult."

But the investigations showed clearly what the problem was and meant that doctors at the unit could recommend a clear treatment plan for Nicola and Stuart.

Nicola added: "It was such a relief to know what exactly was wrong and what we could do about it. Finally, after months of waiting and wondering, we could get on with it and begin doing something positive. And the treatment itself wasn't that bad - it was fine. A lot of people find it really gruelling, but for us, it really was OK.

"Stuart always thought the treatment would work, but I wasn't so sure. When Dr Sherriff called me in to get my results, I was already thinking the worst and getting ready for her to tell me that it hadn't worked."

Fortunately, Stuart was right - the couple's first IVF treatment was a success and nine months ago, Nicola gave birth to their son, Isaac.

"We are so, so lucky. Isaac is a perfect baby - he's always happy and smiling and people often comment that he seems very content.

"We're not sure if we'll have any more children - Isaac is keeping us busy enough as it is! But, if we did have more, we'd definitely go back to St Helier. The service was really good - it was always very professional, confidential and we were always treated well."
