Antenatal care

Most of our antenatal care is carried out in the community, through your GP, local health centre and midwifery service. There is an outpatient facility for antenatal care at both hospitals, with midwife and consultant clinics. This service includes maternal medicine, obstetric anaesthetics and diabetic clinics.

At St Helier Hospital, there are clinics for pre-conception, miscarriage, teenage pregnancy, mental health support and substance misuse.

Community midwifery

Community midwives provide the majority of antenatal care for pregnant women, as well as a home birth service. They also provide postnatal care to all women within the Trust's catchment area.

You will have a minimum of three visits at home or in postnatal clinics, although many women have more depending on their needs.

  • Anaesthetic antenatal clinic In this clinic we see all women with medical disorders or anaesthetic complications, and anyone who wants to discuss their options for pain relief in labour.
  • Antenatal classes and workshops Our midwives offer a variety of antenatal classes and workshops at a range of venues and times. These classes are very popular and are generally booked up very quickly.
  • Antenatal diabetes clinic Information about the antenatal clinic the Trust runs for mothers-to-be with diabetes.
  • Cedar clinic - weight management in pregnancy Pregnancy provides you with the golden opportunity to make changes regarding your lifestyle, with immediate and long-term effects for you and your family. This is especially important, if your Body Mass Index (BMI) has been identified as significantly raised (more than 30 kg/m2).
  • Blood tests At Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust we strongly recommend that all pregnant women have the following blood tests.
  • Care options We see most women between 12-14 weeks for their initial booking-in appointment, where we take a full medical history and find out if the pregnancy is likely to be high or low risk.
  • Early pregnancy assessment unit Information about the early pregnancy assessment unit at the Trust and the services it offers.
  • Fetal medicine Fetal medicine is a relatively new branch of obstetrics (child-birth and midwifery), dedicated to the care of the baby before birth.
  • Mental health and substance misuse antenatal clinics Information about the Maple clinic, and how mothers-to-be can be referred to the service.
  • Ultrasound scanning There are ultrasound facilities at Epsom and St Helier hospitals. All women are routinely offered two scans during pregnancy and more will be offered depending on clinical need.
  • Screening You will be offered screening tests during your pregnancy and for your baby in the first few weeks after birth, to detect through blood tests diseases such as sickle cell and thalassaemia, or conditions such as Down's syndrome.
