Assisted Vaginal Delivery

Sometimes your baby can get tired during the second stage of labour, when you're actively pushing. If this happens, a "helping hand" is suggested.

This may take the form of:

  • episiotomy - a small cut if the baby is nearly there

  • ventuose - like a suction cap around the baby's head

  • forceps - like spoons around the baby's head

It may be necessary for the mother to empty her bladder using a catheter, and the baby is usually born 2 -3 contractions later.

The use of instruments doesn't always mean a cut. An episiotomy will only be performed if really necessary. The sutures (stitches) dissolve and can be placed underneath the skin.
