Home birth

For women with a low-risk pregnancy, a home birth can be a more preferable option to giving birth in hospital.

  • Home is a relaxing, stress-free environment for your labour and delivery.
  • You are in control.
  • You may require less pain relief.
  • Family and friends can be close by.
  • Childcare arrangements may be easier.

Giving birth at home, with the support of enthusiastic and experienced Midwives, is as safe as having a baby in hospital when you are fit and healthy and experiencing a normal pregnancy.

We know that women who choose to give birth at home enjoy being in the comfort of their own homes where they are free to eat and drink, potter around, listen to music or watch TV or do whatever takes their fancy and relax in familiar surroundings. All of this helps to facilitate normal birth, which is why women who choose Home Birth are less likely to request epidurals, have Caesarean sections, assisted deliveries or stitches, or report unsatisfactory experiences.

  • Why choose to have a baby at home? The Royal College of Midwives and The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recognise that having a baby at home is a safe way to have a baby when you are fit, healthy and have had an uncomplicated pregnancy.
  • Home birth workshops We offer an ongoing programme of Home Birth Workshops where you have the opportunity to meet Mums and Dads who have had their own babies at home and meet our lovely Community Midwives.
  • Patient experience stories These are just some of the comments new mums and families have made following their homebirth experience.
  • Questions and answers about home birth Frequently asked questions about having a baby in your own house.
