The Trust provides accident and emergency facilities at both Epsom and St Helier hospitals, and there is a dedicated paediatric A&E area on both hospital sites, where children under the age of 16 are seen.
Epsom Hospital
There is a separate children's area within the main Emergency department, staffed by registered children's nurses which is open between 8am and 8pm. At night, children are seen and treated in the general accident and emergency department.
All children brought in are seen by an emergency medicine doctor first, and, if necessary, referred to a paediatrician and admitted to the paediatric unit. For emergency surgery and trauma, they are sent primarily to Queen Mary's Hospital for Children at the St Helier site.
St Helier Hospital
This is the only dedicated children's emergency department that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week in southwest London. It is next to the main A&E department but is audio-visually separated and is staffed by registered children's nurses and children's doctors.
All children brought in are seen directly by a paediatrician and supervision is given by consultants from both paediatric and emergency medicine backgrounds. We are supported by the Queen Marys Hospital for Children which provides acute in-patient care for both medical, surgical and trauma patients and is currently celebrating its' centenary year.
There are weekly trauma and bi-weekly medical review clinics performed by consultants to review patients rapidly that are seen in the emergency department.
