Specialist care

The paediatric department provides treatment and care in a number of specialist areas. Please use the list at the bottom of this page to find out more about these services.

 

  • Endocrinology (paediatric and adolescent) The department provides a comprehensive specialist endocrinology service for children and young adults with conditions caused by hormonal problems. We carry out a full range of dynamic and other complex investigations on a day-case or outpatient basis at St Helier and Epsom hospitals.
  • Diabetes (paediatric and adolescent) Multidisciplinary service including a consultant paediatrician with special interest in diabetes, paediatric diabetes, a nurse specialist, paediatric dietician and clinical psychologist.
  • Oncology shared care Epsom Hospital is a paediaric oncology shared care unit (POSCU). It maintains strong links with primary treatment centres, including the Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street hospitals.
  • Paediatric nephrology The paediatric nephrology services for children at Queen Mary's Hospital for Children are run by Dr Rim El-Rifai. This includes the excellent outpatients services for patients with kidney problems, which are highly dependant on the children's dedicated x-ray department, children's pharmacy, and access to high class specialist imaging such as nuclear medicine.
  • Paediatric gastroenterology Our dedicated paediatric gastroenterology service cares for children with a wide range of gastrointestinal (GI) and nutritional problems, including children with severe constipation, gastroesophageal reflux (GORD) and oesophagitis, coeliac disease and chronic inflammatory bowel disease (CIBD).
  • Respiratory conditions We offer a patient-focused service for chidren requiring a specialist paediatric respiratory opinion, as close to home as possible.
  • Visiting specialist consultants In addition, we have a number of visiting specialist consultants to support our work.

Referrals

Children can be referred directly from their GP, from consultant colleagues or directly from screening programmes.
