Endocrinology (paediatric and adolescent)

The department provides a comprehensive specialist endocrinology service for children and young adults with conditions caused by hormonal problems. There are outpatient clinics at both Queen Mary's Hospital for Children (QMHC) on the St Helier Hospital site and Epsom Hospital.

We carry out a full range of dynamic and other complex investigations on a day-case or outpatient basis at St Helier Hospital and Epsom Hospital. These are performed following agreed protocols by the paediatric endocrine nurse specialist on the paediatric day assessment unit at Queen Mary's Hospital for Children.

This is supported by the Trust's chemical pathology and immunology services; we also have excellent endocrine imaging services including ultrasound, CT and MRI scanning, and nuclear medicine. We work closely with colleagues within the Trust, at St George's Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital.

We manage inpatients who are admitted because of endocrine emergencies or who are found to have new endocrine problems. We also provide a consultation service for other inpatients with endocrine disorders.

We deal with a wide range of endocrine and metabolic disorders, including:

  • short statur

  • tall stature

  • early puberty

  • delayed puberty

  • thyroid diseases

  • polycystic ovary syndrome

  • hirsutism

  • virilisation

  • male and female hypogonadism

  • calcium disorders

  • disorders of the adrenal glands
