The family planning service provides a range of services including health promotion, contraceptive advice, contraceptive services including all long acting reversible methods (LARCs), counselling and referral for TOPs, cervical screening, advice about sexually transmissible diseases and medical gynaecological problems including menorrhagia.
The family planning service also provides specialist clinics for psychosexual problems, complex contraceptive problems and a referral clinic for coils and implants, vasectomy, a service for people with learning disabilities and Chlamydia testing in some clinics
The family planning service provides information and advice via a sexual health helpline (Tel: 020 8407 3636) and leaflets on methods of contraception and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). The service provides a focal point for information and advice on all reproductive and contraceptive health for other areas of the PCT (school nursing, health visitors, primary care)
It also runs a pharmacy emergency hormonal contraceptive scheme, and has specialist input to pupils/ schools on reproductive and sexual health issues, young peoples clinics (including boys clinic).
A key role for the service is to provide clinical support for primary care and to compliment the services they provide offering both specialist services and easily accessible services for women who cannot see or choose not to see their GP for these very personal services
Teaching and training primary care staff is an integral part of the service.
