Debbie Louth
Debbie Louth

October 2011

The latest award was presented to Debbie Louth, a patient pathway co-ordinator in the antenatal department. Debbie was nominated by complaints co-ordinator Shelley Walpole, who spoke highly of Debbie's commitment to the department and in particular one patient who had reported some concerns about an appointment.

Shelley said: "Debbie demonstrated a real commitment to one of our mothers-to-be recently, who had reported a few concerns about how her appointments were being managed. On receipt of the complaint, Debbie came to chat with me, talked about what the options were for the patient and how she felt we could put this right for her.

"Debbie took ownership of the problem and saw it through to completion, even greeting the woman when she arrived for her follow up appointment and offered to call her at the end of the week - just to check how she is.

"Debbie kept me updated along the way so that I too knew what was happening which was really helpful. The antenatal team are lucky to have her."

This time, the award went to senior communications officer, Claire Proudlock.

Claire was nominated by Jane Ward, our head of environmental support services and Communications Manager Oliver Wilkinson. Jane said: "I have just read the latest Steps which is superb and has been consistently great for the longest time now.

"The stories are interesting and informative and the presentation is fab. I would challenge any other hospitals to provide staff with anything better.

"I think we can take for granted the dedication and commitment it takes to produce this month in, month out and all of this is on top of the rest of Claire's day job."

Oliver added: "Claire comes to work every day with attitude of being happy, able and willing to help. She shows a genuine passion and commitment to the work of our hospitals, to the team and - most importantly - to our patients.

"I regularly see Claire engage with our patients, visitors, staff and volunteers and am constantly impressed by her positive manner, courtesy, politeness, and willingness to help. She is an invaluable colleague, a respected member of the team, someone who asks how we can do something in the best way for our patients, and for our staff."

July 2011

In July, the award goes to undergraduate co-ordinator Stephen Rosan from Epsom. Stephen, who was nominated by five separate members of staff, was put forward for the award for his dedication, commitment and for always coming to work with a smile on his face.

Fellow undergraduate co-ordinator Simon Rippon echoed the thoughts of his colleagues as he said: "Stephen is the type of person who always works above and beyond the call of duty.

"He is incredibly committed to his medical students (who are the doctors of tomorrow), as he supports them professionally but also on a personal basis, through what can be a difficult time for them.

"Due to the nature of his role and the interaction he has with other departments, Stephen is a very well known and well-liked member of staff on the Epsom site and because of his amazing attitude he is often inundated with request to help other departments. He never turns anyone away and more often than not the requests are not within his job remit."

June 2011

This month, Chief Executive Matthew Hopkins presented the award to clinical site manager Janet Ford. Janet was nominated by joint Head of Nursing for Medicine Tracey Smith, for her commitment to other staff members and our patients.

Tracey nominated Janet following a very busy night for our hospitals, when Tracey was on-call manager and Janet was overseeing a very busy accident and emergency department.

Tracey said: "Janet worked with all the wards to ensure that they were safe to deliver patient care and staff felt supported by her actions. Janet kept me informed of her actions through out and was calm and measured in all her actions.

"Janet did a marvellous job and I feel she should be recognised for her hard work and support."

May 2011

Claudine Hastick, clinic co-ordinator for cardiology, who picked up the award of excellence for the month of May, was praised for her efficiency and commitment in the nomination she received, which said: "I would like to thank Claudine for her highly efficient and prompt attention and service. When being referred by Epsom and St Helier to St George's cardiology, Claudine promptly investigated my referral when mislaid by St George's, and kept me informed at all stages.

"Furthermore, when attending my GP recently, Claudine ensured that results and my medical report were immediately faxed to my GP, which was of great assistance to the consultation. I felt very reassured and valued as a patient and am extremely impressed with Claudine's professionalism and utmost courtesy at all time, for which I am very grateful. Many, many thanks Claudine!"

Sarah Parker, staff nurse on Alex ward

April 2011

In April, we celebrated the hard work of Sarah Parker, a staff nurse on Alex ward.

Sarah's nomination came from a patient who spoke very highly of the care she received, and praised Sarah for her caring and professional manner. The nomination said: "Sarah is a superb example of what a staff nurse should be. As well as doing her job well (which she does) she has time to go the extra mile and find time to add the human touch to her duties. She is always smiling and although she is busy she gives patients the impression that she has the time for each and every one of them.

"I watched the way she treated the elderly and frail patients on my ward with compassion and dignity. I consider myself fortunate to have been looked after by her. She is an excellent ambassador for your hospital and you are very lucky to have her."

Charles Mantilas, domestic services manager

March 2011

March's winner of the award was Charles Mantilas, domestic services manager, who was presented with a framed certificate and gift vouchers from Chief Executive Matthew Hopkins.

Charles was nominated by two people for this award, PALS manager Lesley Scott and property services manager, Richard Jarvis. In his nomination, Richard said: "Charles goes above and beyond his normal duties. He is always there when you need him and he always provides his services regardless of the task at hand.

"Nothing is too much trouble and service is always received with a smile!

"We experienced an issue where contractors working in CAU caused a huge amount of dust across the ward. I reported this at around 4.15pm. Charles and his team attended immediately and worked on until late to clean the ward and return it spotlessly clean - without a single moan or groan. Charles just rolled his sleeves up and 'mucked in'. This is just one example of the many I have witnessed.

"Charles is very committed to his job and his attitude is always positive. He is caring and considerate and always puts others before himself."

Matthew said: "Charles is a member of staff that is often nominated for awards by staff from across our hospitals, as well as by his own colleagues in corporate infrastructure.

"In previous years, he has received recognition through our annual awards as the winner of the infection control award. Additional nominations over a period of time suggest that Charles continues to have a positive impact on those he works with. This is a great achievement and I was delighted to present this award to Charles."

February 2011

February's award went to our Freedom of Information (FoI) officer, Wendy Jolley for the dedication and commitment she shows to her work.

Wendy was nominated by her colleague, web manager Alex Schleif. Alex said: "Wendy puts so much effort into her work, trying to get every single FoI request answered fully and within the time frame set by law. On top of this demanding work, she also manages the communications office two days a week during the absence of the office manager. Finally, she looks after policies for the organisation and makes sure they get updated and uploaded.

"Wendy is a great colleague and always helps out. She doesn't know the word 'no' and is a joy to work with. She very often stays late to get everything done - doing three jobs in one surely isn't easy."

January 2011

January's award was presented to Dr Philippa Youd, a consultant in our
gastroenterology department, for the care and dedication that she shows to our patients.

She was nominated by the relative of a patient, who said: "Dr Philippa Youd carried out a procedure that my father was very anxious about, as his last experience of the same procedure had been unpleasant and painful. Dr Youd took the time to explain what she was doing and she worked carefully and gently to ensure that my father was as comfortable as possible.

"She was totally patient-focussed and thorough, and her expertise and reassurance removed all of my father's anxiety. Without doubt she displayed kindness, care and professionalism. Furthermore, under her leadership, Dr Youd's team worked together to ensure that my father's experience was a positive one and he had total confidence in each person who was involved."
